MARK'S LEGACY IS A SPORTING GESTURE
by PAT O'ROURKE

At around 10pm on November 5, 2004, Mark McCabe retuned to his home in Donaghmede after spending the night working in Dunnes Stores.

He sat down to watch television and have a chat with his parents. He was in great form and looking forward to playing a soccer match the following day for Seaview United. His brother Paul played on the same team.

Around midnight, Mark said goodnight to his Mum, Dad and brother and went to bed. Tragically, Mark never woke up and was found dead the next morning. Aged just 23, he had died in his sleep from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

There was profound grief following Mark's death in the tight-knit Donaghmede community. In Mark's memory, his friends organised a benefit night in September 2005 in the Trinity Sports and Leisure Centre to raise money to buy a couple of defibrillators for local sports organisations. A defibrillator is a machine that is used to apply an electric current to the heart to restore its normal rhythm.

The benefit night realised 14,000 Euro, which was way beyond the organising committee's dreams. In fact, the sum raised was so high that the committee was able to purchase seven machines.

Last Monday night (May 29th 2006) at the Trinity Sports and Leisure Centre, Mark's parents, Larry and Marie McCabe, handed over the seven defibrillators to local sports clubs.

The organisations that will benefit from the gesture are:

Trinity Sports & Leisure Club
Trinity Sports & Leisure Football Club
Donahies Community School
De La Salle Community School
Grange Community College
Trinity Gaels GAA Club
North Dublin Schoolboys/Girls Football League

Training on how to use the defibrillator is to be provided for all the seven organisations. Donaghmede man, Brian Byrne, said the response to the fundraising event was truly amazing. "Credit must go to the organising committee comprising Maura and Rita Flood, Mark Beggs and Andrew Kennedy," said Mr Byrne.

"A special thank you must be extended to Mark's parents Larry and Marie and their family. They have shown tremendous courage and strength since Mark's death. "They are extremely grateful to the Donaghmede community for ensuring that the fundraising event was a huge success." Mr Byrne added: "On a personal note I can only hope and pray that none of the defibrillators ever have to be used."

Currently in Ireland the survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is one per cent. For first response professionals like fire and ambulance services, the defibrillator is standard equipment. For schools, offices, shops, factories, hotels, gyms and any public place, it is as vital as a fire extinguisher.
